The announcement brings 20 teams from Brazil to the Pro Evolution series for the first time, including Palmeiras and Santos.

They won’t be half-hearted additions either, as each team will come complete with updated squad lists, current kits and stadiums.

Although no sports game has ever got it completely right, the PES series is at least trying – although gameplay and actually being fun are important factors, too many developers are ignoring the simple fact that having a wide range of teams and leagues is extremely important.

I hate to resort to EA as an example, but take a look at the Madden franchise – owning every NFL licence exclusively, and then turning out games that have occasionally been less than perfect.

The Fight Night series of games is guilty of the same crime, including a few of the big boxing names but demanding extra cash for some of the more modern fighters.

Set for release in the next few months, PES 2013 will also feature the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo taking pride of place on the front cover.

The Portuguese forward was also one of the fifty footballers who were part of the motion-capture development for the title.
