New domain to be global phonebook

Trademark registrations are now being
invited for .tel domain addresses, where owners can store all their contact
information: web addresses, email, phone and fax numbers, call centre, SMS, etc.

The .tel address will offer a one-click
connectivity point. Businesses can use their company name or brand as an
interactive communications hub. The domain is cloud-based and will work through
any web-capable device, especially mobile phones and PDAs.

Information can be updated in real time.
Users can also select levels of security, so that some information is visible
only to approved contacts.

The domain is owned and operated by Telnic,
a UK-based limited liability company. The .tel domain was one of several new
domains approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) in 2006.

"The launch of .tel represents the most
significant innovation in the domain name system since the advent of .com,"
said Khashayar Mahdavi, CEO of Telnic. "Essentially, the .tel offers businesses
of all sizes a fast, efficient, adaptable and intelligent service that will let
customers interact with them in any way they want. Anyone that wants to
communicate better with their customers should purchase a .tel."

Individual users will be invited to
register in late March 2009. They can post additional information about
themselves if they wish, such as their business or personal interests, social
network details – or even their gaming IDs.

The "sunrise" period for trademark
registrations is open from now until February 2. Premium-price registrations
will be open from February 3 till March 23, and general registrations from
March 24.

Telnic will only say that the final price
for a .tel domain will be in line with that charged for other domains.
