Say goodbye to the iPod

Apple has removed the section on the iTunes store devoted to click-wheel games, prompting further speculation the iconic iPod could be approaching the end.

The music player, so closely linked with Apple’s rise to superpower status, has been usurped of late by multi-function devices like the iPhone, with recent figures indicating the iPod accounts for less and less of the company’s profits.

The removal of click-wheel games will affect the iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle models; whether the touchscreen-based iPod Touch and iPod Nano survive to carry on the name remains to be seen.

The first iPod was released on November 10, 2001.
