Sony: PSN fully restored by end of this week
Tue, 31st May 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Sony announced today it will have fully restored all PlayStation Network services in the Americas, Europe and most of Asia (update: confirmed to include New Zealand) by the end of this week. This brings an end to the drama that started over a month ago, when the network's security was breached by hackers.

Sony has said it has implemented "considerable security enhancements" as well as conducted testing of the payment process and commerce functions. Though consumers may still have cause to worry as the company has been plagued with continued reports of lax security—and more attacks have been promised.

Partial restoration began on 28 May and users were able to access to some of the services such as online game play, account management, friend lists and chat functionality. The full restoration will include:

  • Full functionality on PlayStation Store
  • In-game commerce
  • Ability to redeem vouchers and codes
  • Full functionality on Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3, PSP, VAIO and other PCs
  • Full functionality on Media GO

Sony executive vice president Kazuo Hirai thanked fans for bearing with the company. "We appreciate the patience and support shown during this time.
