Super creeps and popcorn - scary movies to watch this Halloween
Fri, 31st Oct 2014
FYI, this story is more than a year old

The witches, warlocks, vampires and ghosts knocking on front doors this evening should prove an excellent catalyst to make some popcorn, turn off the lights and settle down for a night of scary films.

Need some inspiration for selecting some truly horrifying movies? Then check out our Top 10 movies that scare you to death!

The Descent (2005)

This movie had my macho flatmate at the time screaming like a little girl. A group of friends feel like an adventure and go exploring a cave. Turns out it isn't as uninhabited as they thought, and the creatures that dwell within enjoy the taste of flesh. Gruesome special effects and a couple of plot twists will leave you with no desire to ever venture below the surface of the earth again!

Amityville Horror (1979)

A classic horror film, with the real-life owners of the house claiming it is a true story.   Something in this house doesn't want the new owners and their children there, and is making no secret of it. Paranormal activities increase until the family run screaming, less than a month after moving in. This film has spawned numerous sequels and a re-make, so you could always have an “Amityville” themed night, as long as your house doesn't pick up good ideas on how to get you to move out!

It (1990)

So you laugh at people who are afraid of clowns? You won't think it is so funny after witnessing this film, based on the Stephen King novel. Just remember if a clown appears in the drain and invites you to come play, it is better to say no!

The Omen (1976)

Do not watch the cemetery scene in the dark – it will haunt you for the rest of your life!  Apart from that settle back to watch the movie about a loving and successful couple who end up adopting a sweet little boy. Who ends up being the spawn of Satan. But apart from that he is adorable! Really!

The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

For something a little less slashy-horror and more psychological try this thriller starring Richard Gere, who finds himself working as a journalist in a quaint small town in the heart of West Virginia. Only possible issue? The supernatural beings who have also decided it is a nice place to call home.

Pet Sematary (1989)

If you want something the children (well maybe pre-teens!) can enjoy then put on this film. Another one based on a Stephen King book, it tries to prove to viewers why sometimes dead is better – and using the family pet and a toddler to drive the point home!

The Scary Movie Franchise (2000 onwards)

Want something scary but so over-the-top you laugh rather than scream? Try the Scary Movie franchise on for size. Highly amusing, with strange storylines and some seriously sick moments!

The Exorcist (1973)

It has to be here! One of the most famous horror films ever made, it thrilled a generation with a girl, a priest, the devil and some possession moves that included flexibility in the neck that usually only owls can achieve.

Paranormal Activity (2007)

Filmed via the use of camcorders and security cameras this movie uses “found footage” to display what happens when you buy the wrong house.  In some ways this echoes the Amityville Horror, however the filming style and intensity makes this one that will leave you too scared to turn around when you hear something creeping up behind the sofa. But is it real footage, or all made up?  You decide……

Van Helsing (2004)

It wouldn't be a horror movie list without the mention of a Dracula-style story, and this one even makes room for that other old favourite Dr Frankenstein and his monster.  Together, with a werewolf, their characters are placed in an original, dark story staring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckingside, and it proved one of the biggest blockbusters of 2004.
