FYI, this story is more than a year old

Telecom has announced that its customers can be the first in the country to buy the new Samsung Galaxy S4, due for release in late April.

After Samsung launched it's next-generation smartphone around the world last week, the telco says it is now open for pre-orders of the device via its website as of today.

The Galaxy S4 has an RRP of $1149, but will cost $0 upfront on Telecom’s 24-month $139 smartphone plan.

Telecom’s chief marketing officer, Jason Paris said that there was a huge amount of interest in the new Samsung Galaxy S4.

“This phone has some very exciting features, and we know our customers are looking forward to putting it through its paces on our Smartphone Network," he said.

"We wanted them to be at the front of the queue when the phone is released in New Zealand – and so we are opening for pre-orders early.”

Telecom, cast in bad light over recent job cuts, will be hoping the news can signal a change in fortunes for the company going forward.
