Yahoo names Google's Marissa Mayer as new CEO
Wed, 18th Jul 2012
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Long-time Google employee Marissa Mayer has been named the new CEO of Yahoo, filling the role that’s been vacant since mid-May when Scott Thompson stepped down following a scandal over inaccuracies in his resume.

Starting with Google in 1999, Mayer was the company’s 20th employee, and its first female engineer.

According to a release from Yahoo, Mayer ‘led efforts for many of Google’s most recognisable products, including the development of its flagship search product and iconic homepage for over 10 years’.

"Mayer managed some of Google’s most successful innovations, launching more than 100 features and products including image, book and product search, toolbar, iGoogle, Google News, and Gmail – creating much of the ‘look ad feel’ of the Google user experience,” the release reads.

In 2010 Mayer took up the role of vice president, local, maps and location services, making her responsible for products including Google Maps and Google Earth.

Interim CEO Ross Levinsohn was expected by many to be offered the top job, having led the company since May 13. His ongoing role with the company has not been clarified.

Mayer is the third CEO for Yahoo in 12 months; Thompson was only hired in January to replace Carol Bartz, who was fired in September for poor performance.
