App Review: Kingdom Rush
Fri, 19th Jul 2013
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Barricade your doors, block up you windows, and find a good place to hide, because for the next few days you won’t be doing anything but fight off hoards of enemies.

Developers Ironhide return with the sequel to wildly addictive Kingdom Rush, Frontiers. The game’s formula hasn’t changed that much. But with game mechanics this good, why would you?

Kingdom Rush Frontiers is a top-down tower defence game where you’re tasked with defending a path by planting down barracks, watch posts, mage towers, and artillery cannons in strategic positions.

With the aid of soldiers, who fight the enemies directly, to archers and mages, who either shoot or zap their enemies down respectively; you aim to stop the enemies from breaching pass a predetermined line.

For every enemy killed you gain coins to spend on upgrading you troops, from axe throwing occultists, shadowy assassins, necromancer that can raise your enemies from their graves to fight for you, and drills that can spill masses of lava killing anything that crosses its scorched ground.

Between each battle you can buy items that can aid in battle, and permanent upgrades for your troops. The heroes from the first game return, this time with improvements.

As you play the game, your heroes will level up, allowing you to add upgrades that make them even more powerful against enemies.

For a game as good as Kingdom Rush, it was a tall ask to improve on it. The games more wilderness style contrasts to the original’s more medieval feel.

The game might be difficult, even on the easiest of modes, but with countless hours of bash and slashing, you’ll quickly become addictive.
