NZ “fastest growing” PC market in APAC…

New Zealand now has the fastest growing PC market in Asia Pacific, with a 19% increase in shipments year-on-year during the second quarter of 2014.

IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly PC Tracker also shows 191,290 PC shipments for the second quarter of 2014, up from 160,291 for the same period in 2013. A 10% quarter-on-quarter increase was also recorded for the period.

Arunachalam Muthiah, IDC market analyst, says New Zealand has lead the Asia Pacific region during the first half of 2014 in regards to PC growth – and that is expected to continue.

“This propulsion is expected to continue throughout 2014, thus elevating New Zealand to the best performing market in the region,” Muthiah says.

He says New Zealand has grown year-on-year by 21% during the first half of 2014, while Asia Pacific, excluding Japan (APeJ), has declined 10% over the same period. Meanwhile, New Zealand is expected to grow by 14% in 2014 over 2013, while APeJ is expected to decline by 8% for the same period.

He says a positive economic scenario, with strong consumer confidence and a falling unemployment rate, provided the much needed momentum for revamping consumer interests in PCs. In the commercial space, continued PC replacements on account of routine business purchases and XP migration, drove the growth.

“Robust performance of entry level notebooks, declining prices, impending saturation of the tablet market, channel and end-user promotions and substantial business deals across the commercial segment worked in unison to contribute to this increase,” Muthiah says.

Vendor-side

When it comes down to the vendor breakdown, HP continued to dominate, growing its market share quarter-on-quarter to 37.3% – up from 33.2% for the same period in 2013, with shipments for the period hitting 71,275, up from 52,205 for Q2 2103.

Acer and Apple were the second and third biggest vendors, with 17.4% and 12.2% market share respectively, up from 16.6% and 11.2% respectively.

Toshiba held on to fourth spot, despite dropping from 10.4% of the market share to 9.6%, with Dell coming in fifth with 6.4%, down from 6.8%.
